Why a tailored suit is worth the investment

In men’s fashion, tailoring stands as an indispensable pillar. While off-the-rack (‘off-the-peg’) clothing offers convenience, nothing quite matches the sophistication and personalisation that tailored garments afford.

For everyday wear, off-the-rack may be the affordable option and perfectly adequate for the everyday man. However, for a very special occasion or to make an outstanding impression, a tailored suit is essential. For an executive, the impact of a tailored suit is undeniable.

“Clothes maketh the man.”

The quote is often attributed to Mark Twain. However, a more direct line is from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. In this play, Polonius advises his son Laertes, “apparel oft proclaims the man”.

Tailoring not only elevates one’s appearance but also enhances comfort and confidence. Understanding the nuances of tailoring can empower men to dress impeccably. It ensures that their attire complements their body silhouette and measurements flawlessly.

Men’s tailoring can transform the way clothing fits, wears, and feels, ultimately enhancing both style and comfort. If a man has never visited a tailor, it could be daunting. Here are some aspects of the process:

Precision measurements

The foundation of impeccable tailoring lies in precise measurements. A skilled tailor meticulously takes measurements of various body parts, including chest, waist, hips, shoulders, arms, and inseam.

These measurements serve as the blueprint for crafting garments that touch the body in the right places, ensuring a flattering fit.

Proportionate silhouette

Tailoring involves more than just making clothes fit well. It’s about creating a silhouette that complements the wearer’s physique.

For instance, a well-tailored suit jacket should accentuate the shoulders without being overly tight. It should also taper at the waist for a defined look. Additionally, the sleeve should extend to the base of the thumb to achieve the ideal length.

A tailor can disguise desired aspects and balance the look of the body. If you are a broad-shouldered man who is not very tall, a tailored suit can balance your appearance. This can be achieved with the style of the jacket, width of the trouser legs, or set of the sleeve at the shoulder, etc.

Fabric choice

Fabric can significantly impact both the aesthetic appeal and comfort of tailored clothing.

Lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen are ideal for warmer climates, offering breathability and comfort. Wool and wool blends, on the other hand, are versatile options suitable for various seasons, providing warmth without sacrificing style.

Attention to detail

It’s the subtle details that distinguish a tailored garment from its off-the-rack counterpart.

The stitching of seams is carefully considered. The placement of buttons and the lining of pockets are also meticulously evaluated to ensure a polished finish.

Attention to detail extends to the selection of buttons, lapel width, and the positioning of cuffs, all of which contribute to the garment’s overall elegance.

Tailoring for comfort

Beyond aesthetics, comfort is paramount when it comes to tailored clothing. A well-fitted garment should allow for ease of movement without feeling restrictive. Tailors often incorporate subtle adjustments such as adding extra fabric in key areas or using stretch materials to enhance comfort without compromising on style.

Personalisation and customisation

One of the greatest advantages of tailoring is the ability to personalise garments according to individual preferences.

Whether it’s selecting a specific fabric, opting for a particular style of lapel, or adding unique embellishments, tailored clothing allows men to express their personal style in a way that off-the-rack options cannot.

Regular alterations

As bodies change over time, so too should our clothing. Regular alterations by a skilled tailor ensure that garments continue to fit perfectly, maintaining both style and comfort.

Whether it’s adjusting the waistline of trousers or tapering the sleeves of a jacket, these minor changes can breathe new life into existing clothing. They prolong their lifespan and ensure a timeless appeal.

By investing in tailored clothing, men can elevate their style whilst enjoying comfort and confidence. Perfectly fitted suits and bespoke shirts enhance the appearance and feel of garments. They make them an essential wardrobe staple for the discerning man.

Any man seeking to elevate his appearance should visit a tailor. They can also explore tailored options for their wardrobe.

A well-fitting, beautifully made suit will pay back many times in ‘cost per wear’ and look good for many years.

I spent around 20 years working in design management and corporate branding. I cut my teeth as a Publicity Executive for a UK TV company in the 80s and progressed through design agencies to Global Head of Branding & Corporate Identity for a major international investment bank. A chronic health condition led me to complementary health and to become a practitioner. After another 21 years working as a therapist/coach to business people I pursued a long-held dream and graduated from The London School of Make-Up and The British College of Professional Styling. Funny how it can take a lifetime to find out what you really want to do. I'm reminded of Baz Lhurmann "Some of the most interesting 40 year-olds I know, still don't'. 2019 and the Pandemic led me again to a reassessment of what I want to do and how I want to work led me to pursue my interests and seems to have brought me right back around to design, bringing my 21 years of building confidence in people along with me. I enjoy design from all aspects but particularly its key purpose - functionality. I've always had a natural eye for colour and design running alongside a love of clothes. I wouldn't say 'fashion' per se. Fashion is fun and enjoyable but I've never been a fashion addict. I enjoy trends and do follow some but I am more interested in craftsmanship and the development of individual style for myself and others. I enjoy sewing. Being a seamstress is a great way of understanding how clothing is constructed, especially reverse engineering it by taking something apart to alter it or just to see how it is made. Men’s tailoring, women’s clothing and couture has long been a passion of mine. I am fascinated by how we can change our appearance by a single, simple gesture and how we are perceived by how we dress and present ourselves. Confidence can be built or crushed by what we wear and either elevate or destroy style. I love the synergy between the art and science of creating style. I'm loving working with people to create their own personal style and have a passion for dressing sustainably.
